Discovering how to sleep better can be as simple as wearing a sleeping mask or installing blackout curtains (black out shades). Or you could replace some of your bad sleep habits with good ones, such as:

  • going to bed and waking at the same time
  • going to bed between 10 pm and midnight
  • stop all caffeine consumption by lunch time

However, most of us are looking for that "quick fix". Incorporating good sleep hygiene into your daily routine takes time and resolve. Wearing a sleep mask provides many immediate benefits ... often overnight!

How to Sleep Better? ... Sleep in a Pitch Black Bedroom

Test: Is Your Bedroom Dark Enough?
Hold up your hand about one foot in front of your face, 15-20 seconds after you've turned off your bedroom light(s). Can you see your hand in the dark, even slightly? If so, you need to darken your bedroom so you no longer can see your hand.

Installing blackout curtains so that you sleep in total darkness is not always an easy or an affordable option. And, if the installer isn't totally obsessed with eliminating all light seepage, especially around the top bottom and sides, your natural melatonin production, critical for healthy sleeping, will be compromised, as will your investment.

However, wearing a sleep mask or sleep shade is convenient, very affordable and effective in blocking out light at night from computers and alarm clocks, night lights, or bed partner's late night reading light (even when you have black out window coverings).
