Symptoms Sleep Apnea?
Like so many other sufferers, would you even know if you have it? Take a minute to answer these questions:
• Upon waking in the morning, do you find it hard to get yourself motivated?
• Do you stay tired all day long and do not understand why?
• Do you find yourself dozing off throughout the day and not realizing you are doing so?
These are the first signs that you may have sleep apnea.
Sleep is vital to our body's rejuvenating process and maintaining good health. If you are not able to get quality sleep, your body will respond in various ways showing you symptoms sleep apnea.
Recognizing signs that your body is in distress, is the key to
fixing the problem. Sleep apnea symtoms vary in different people
depending on the severity of the case. Do you recognize any of these
symptoms sleep apnea?
• Sore or dry throat and/or dry mouth in the mornings
Sleep apnea symptoms occur when there is an obstruction of the airway. When the airway is obstructed, you may be trying to breathe through your mouth leaving it open for most of the night. Doing so causes your throat to be very dry or even sore when you wake in the morning.
• Constantly moving during sleep
Tossing and turning during the night is a sleep apnea symtom. This is your body's way of trying to tell you your airway is obstructed. By moving around you are trying to find a better way to breathe.
to where it wakes you (or others)
Snoring is a key sleep apnea symptom –– if you snore, no matter what position you are in, this is cause for concern. Don't dismiss your snoring even if you think it's because of sinus or other nasal problems. If you find yourself snoring hard and loudly, especially when on your back, this is a sign your body is fighting hard to help you breathe.
• Dozing off during key parts of your day
Dozing off during the day while doing things such as driving, reading or other tasks requiring sitting and concentrating is another sleep apnea symtom. Is your productivity and effectiveness at work or school suffering? Is sleeping on the job grounds for dismissal at your work? How long will it be before you're caught?
Even though you go to bed at an early time and think you are allowing yourself adequate time for sleep, you are actually being robbed of vital quality sleep. Just as you start to fall into a deep sleep and your body relaxes, your airway becomes obstructed and instantly your body's healthy sleep cycle is disrupted.
• Not being able to focus or concentrate
Lack of focus or concentration on even the simplest of things is another one of the common sleep apnea symptoms. When your body is constantly in a fatigued state, it makes it very difficult to focus your mind on even the basic of tasks. You also might notice your memory failing. Those 'senior moments' could quite likely be more due to lack of sleep quality than age.
• Mood swings leading to depression
Most everyone gets cranky when they do not get enough sleep. However, if you have sleep apnea and do not know it, you can go months (and years) without proper sleep, causing you to have personality changes, mood swings, involving irritability, anxiety and even depression. Another symptom of sleep apnea!
• Frequent breathing cessation
Sometimes you may wake gasping for air; however, even without waking you are probably having many episodes of breathing cessation throughout the night. It's often your sleep partner that notices. It's no wonder so many health issues result including stroke, heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, weight gain, and more. Having this happen night after night, your body never gets the restful sleep it needs to rejuvenate. It's a downward health spiral.
Wait! ... there's more symptoms sleep apnea!
As if the above sleep apnea symptoms weren't enough. Here's some more equally important signs:
• Wake feeling more exhausted than when you went to bed
• Wake with headaches in the a.m.
• Heartburn, acid reflux (GERD), digestion problems
• Aching or swelling legs
• Sweating and chest pains during the night
• Frequent need to urinate during the night
• Insomnia symptoms
